Book: 20200116 to 20200201, "Lying" by Sam Harris

This is a thin book. It seems mainly tells us how/why to tell truth tactfully.

20200116, "Lying"

"Lie" is mainly about intention, not truth.

"Lie" means we don't have courage to face the truth. Telling the truth could be the first step to improve our life situation.

When we choose to lie(instead of refusing to speak out), normally that means we did something wrong. So lying allow/encourage us to do the wrong thing. If we always do the correct thing, then we don't need to lie.

Another possible reason is, what assume that the other side don't want to hear the truth. Or it's better to them to hear lies. We want to make decisions for other people. But this assumption is quite possible wrong.

For governments and big companies, when they lie, they will eventually lose their credibility, which is disaster in long term. However, it's hard to tell intention from truth here.

20200128, "Appendix A: A Conversation with Ronald A. Howard"

Skillfull truth-telling. We don't need to lie, and we also don't need to tell the plain truth directly. In many cases, we can provide a "hint", or something actually meaningless.

Is this what the politician's doing, or we can call it "diplomatic language"?

In extreme cases, we can use "lie" as weapon against evil people. If we want to defense ourselves, and we know the other side is not normal kind person, we should/can lie.

What we see are all illusion. Being honest is extremely important to see more "true world and true self". The next step I believe, is to verify the perception.

20200201, "Appendix B: A Conversation with Readers"

When we have to lie, normally that means there is something wrong. The root cause could be the distorted system(such as society, community, company, family, etc.) Sometimes, lying is the necessary means to help us survive in a distorted system. In this case, lying is a weapon for self-defense, which is all right.

Based on "the first principle", we should think from a higher level to see how to resolve the root cause.
