Book: 20261024 to 20261107, "I Left My Homework in the Hamptons" by Blythe Grossberg
20261024 - Chapter 1: The Doors of Fifth Avenue Open, 13
"Every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruiterer in New York - every Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulpless halves." p14
In 1922, only the really, really wealthy people(maybe the top 0.001%) can afford such party every weekend. But 80 years later, I think top 0.1% income family can do similar thing.
If children's lives are constantly structured, they don't know how to cope with boredom or being alone. p44
If it's not structured, the time will be occupied by electrical screens. That happens to the children of normal people. The former is way better, although doesn't solve the real problem: how to make kids ambitious.
20261025 - Chapter 2: The Pie Chart, 53
These were handy targets for a while, and Maria became an expert at scanning her daughter's environment for anything slightly out of place. p79
How to tell which factor is the major one? How can we verify it?
The right one normally is the hard one. A hidden one.
I think we should start from "attention" to do the trouble shooting.
20261025 - Chapter 3: Creating Harmony, 83
Psychologists believe that kids should not have all their peak experiences at a young age because they will have nothing to look forward to when they're older.
The Surfeit of privileged experiences also sets the kids up for depression, as they feel that there is nothing left to do. p91
If they don't need to make effort to get the peak experiences, then it does not worth of struggling when they grow up.
20261101 - Chapter 4: Hothouse Flowers, 113
Private tutors surely help a lot, but that doesn't solve the problem of ambition.
To bring up ambition, we need to let the children to stay in idle, to fail(fall), to get frustrated.
What is the best indicator to measure someone's ambition index?
Poor kids have similar issue. It seems the children in the middle have better chance to squeeze into the tip of the pyramid of the society. At least most of people are in the middle.
20261101 - Chapter 5: Freud on Fifth Avenue, 143
It's interesting that many of the parents I work with have decided that their hopes for their children are to have them replicate their own lives. p155
Why's that? Money brings in the feeling of safety and freedom. But that's just illusion.
The real safety and freedom come from continuous attention.
20261101 - Chapter 6: The Lost Papers, 167
At the tony NYC private schools, there are about five kids out of five hundred who could even be called overweight. p176
20261107 - Chapter 7: Stolen Moments, 191
Kids praying for injury so that they can get a break. p196
The law of entropy is powerful.
Abundance may ruin someone's life. Scarcity may do the same.
Too much idle do the same, just as too much game, study, work, etc.
How to let children to grow ambition?
Many famous people spent extensive amount of time in play, study, work, during their childhood, and made then impressive contribution to the society when they grow up. It seems it's more about luck.
Is this the reason that Elon Musk chose to have so many children?
20261107 - Chapter 8: The New College Try, 203
20261107 - Chapter 9: Citizenship, 243
20261107 - Chapter 10: Farewell, My Lovely, 261
What may happen in AI age?
Poor or rich, they got almost identical AI tutors.
Friends are still the most important part. Besides that, curiosity and ambition become the only thing they need.
